Every year, July 1st is celebrated as Maharashtra State Agriculture Day (Krishi Din). This day honours the contribution of Vasantrao Naik, Maharashtra’s longest-serving Chief Minister and a key figure in the Green Revolution in the state. A Krishi Saptah is also observed during 1st-7th July. The week-long celebrations are filled with events that highlight and celebrate the farmers’ contribution to the development of the state.
Vasantrao Naik: The Man of the People
Vasantrao Naik, born on 1st July 1913, served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1963 to 1975. His tenure was characterised by an unparalleled commitment to rural & agricultural development. He established agricultural universities across the state, improved irrigation systems and promoted scientifically proven modern farming practices through long-lasting policy changes. He supported hybrid crops, visited farms, and encouraged innovation in agriculture at the grassroots level.
His leadership stood out during the severe 1972 drought. He travelled through drought-stricken regions, providing real help to struggling villages. He recognised the link between agriculture and democracy and worked to empower rural women by starting water supply programmes across the state. His legacy forms the foundation of modern Maharashtra’s agrarian structure.
While Vasantrao Naik was making reformative policy changes, our founder, Anant Balkrishna Naik, was empowering farmers on the ground through what is now Naik Krishi Udyog & Co. Though unrelated and sharing only a surname, both men were deeply dedicated to agriculture and rural empowerment. Anant Naik established a trusted name in farm supplies nearly 75 years ago, launching a formal independent business in 1986.
